Think about octopodes. I'm not sure if this holds the same for every octopus species, but I know that at least on kind will forgo eating for months for the sake of its children, and die as a result.

A lot of mammals will distract a predator so their children can survive, even though they are risking their lives. It's such a beautiful thing.

Does altruism actually happen in nature? You know, the theory that animals will save their relatives if it benefits their own gene pool.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You will see that in meerkats and prairie dogs.

When I was a kid, I watched a movie about a bear cub. His mother died in a rock slide. I cried the first time I watched it.

A mother swan was killed several weeks ago in Melbourne trying to protect her nest from some idiotic teenagers throwing rocks at them. And then the father swan risked his life to keep them warm, only leaving for 10 minutes at a time to get just enough food to live. Beautiful maybe, but extremely sad for both the mother and father.
