Haha...well it's popular because a LOT of people like it, or at least will spend money on it, not because it's "good". Good is an opinion, so personally I hate Katy Perry and think she or whoever writes her songs isn't a good composer, but a lot of people buy her music because it's catchy, and that has some merit to it.

My opinion of good is much different than most people's. Once in a while I'll find a popular song that I like, but I can't stand most of it. I don't hate it BECAUSE it's popular; it just so happens that most of the popular songs are, in my opinion, bad.

Not by my standards. And it's not really "mainstream" music that I hate. It's music with no substance, meaningless lyrics, and no real instruments. As it were, mainstream music usually tends to have all of those characteristics.

How am I generalizing at all? I'm just stating fact. Listen to the Adult Top 40. About 90% of the songs that are on that list fit my criteria of "mainstream." Besides, this is a stupid argument. People will like what they like.
