+485 People need to be drug tested before they get food stamps, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Food stamps and welfare.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

For sure! Any government assistance really...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, because if I have to take a drug test for a job that pays taxes to the government to pay welfare, then they should take a drug test to receive that money.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why should someone's children starve just because they are addicted to drugs? Seems kinda cruel, don't you think?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If they were on drugs and got tested their children would be taken away from them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The kids would move to another relative if they didn't have a stable home. This happened to my boyfriend and I'm so glad it did because he would have grown up so differently.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I honestly didn't think of that. Well what would you suggest?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't know if there's anything you can do. I'm kinda opposed to breaking up families and requiring rehab might cost too much. It's an imperfect system, but it's all we've got

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I really hope you're joking.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

preach it, brother!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I live in Florida, and they just passed that law through the Florida Senate. The recipients of welfare have to pass 4 tests a year to continue getting money. I think it's a great idea.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My mom was mentioning this a few weeks ago, I personally thought it was a good idea.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

way to expensive

by Anonymous 12 years ago

*too Not as expensive as paying for some loser to sit at home and do drugs all day.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

idk a good drug test costs about $20-$30 per person, and they are still easy to pass.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's not all that expensive, and the government would be buying them in bulk, making them much cheaper.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

ya thats true, but they are still very easy to pass. Most drugs only take 1-3 days too leave your system and its very easy to dilute your pee by drinking a lot of water.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Maybe so, but these people are drug-heads. Not the brightest crayons in the box :)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't know if its because I'm Canadian or I've just been living under a rock....but what are food stamps?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They're a type of government welfare used in the US that can only be used to pay for food. Because, you know, poor people obviously can't be trusted with real money.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What's your prob, bro? If you want to give your cash out to some druggies, go right ahead, but don't force the rest of us to.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So poor = drug addict? Sounds kind of snobbish.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Just pass a drug test and you get your food stamps. What harm is that? People obviously high/cracked out come into my work all the time and buy snacks, Red Bull, burritos, etc. It's kinda irks me that tax payer's money pays for that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If they're not a drug addict, it shouldn't be a problem, should it?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(mchristie) @1242637 (Richard): But why shouldn't drug addicts get food stamps? Drug addicts need food too. Just because they have an addiction doesn't mean they deserve to starve.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sense you make not. If they have money for drugs... why would I pay for their food?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(mchristie) @1244319 (Richard): I'm talking about drug addicts, not drug users. These people no longer take drugs because they think it might be fun, they do it because of a deep mental AND physical need. Heroin withdrawals can be fatal. Meth withdrawals can cause suicide-inducing depression. Making them choose between food and drugs is not an ethical thing to do.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

U a crackhead? Who contributes nothing to society because of your HABITUAL decision to use drugs? I agree we should offer you rehab. I would be willing to shell out tax dollars for that. BUT ENABLE YOU FURTHER VIA MY MONEY? Fuckkkkk that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No I'm not a crackhead. But yes, you make a good point, it is a habitual decision. Habits can be very hard to break, especially drug habits. A lot of people spend months if not years trying to quit smoking; most drug habits and many many times harder to break than that. It's not like these addicts are going to suddenly realise the error of their ways if you stop giving them food stamps. They aren't going to stop buying drugs to buy food. They will more likely get less food, less nutritious food. A lot of these people would live in a semi-malnourished state rather than give up drugs. The lack of good food and drugs would quickly deteriorate their health and the extra hospital costs could well outweigh the costs of giving them food stamps in the first place. At the end of the day I think the state has a responsibility to ensure that its citizens have a basic standard of living.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's up to them to decide if drugs are more important than food.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Hey, just wondering, does Canada offer anything similar to food stamps?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not that I know of, it's possible that some provinces might have them and others don't, but BC doesn't as far as I know. Welfare here just consists of a weekly cheque that can be used for anything.
