Why do they even make you take an oath to tell the truth when in court? If a person is going to be sincere, then they will, and if a person is going to lie, then they will, too. A promise isn't going to hold when a prison sentence or a fine is on the line, amirite?

Well lying under oath is another charge if they're caught. Hopefully the fear of getting caught in a lie & acquiring another charge will motivate them to be honest.
