+405 The moment a test becomes "open book" it loses its right to be called a test, because it's not testing your knowledge, only your ability to use a glossary and index, amirite?

Not in engineering. You need the book for all of the formaulas and refrence charts. It usually doesn't help you solve the probelms unless there is an example problem just like it!

it tests your ability to take comprehensive notes and to take down the key things

What about an essay test where the only point of the book is for supporting facts and quotes?

It tests your laziness too. I almost failed a open book test a couple years ago because I thought I knew that answers and didn't want to go through massive amounts of notes to find out. That being said, I check now.

but then again a test isnt testing your knowledge its testing what you remember

Testing how well you can find a solution is more applicable to real life situations than testing how well you can remember the solution. Sure it's important not to have to look stuff up, but there is no real life job where you couldn't use sources to help with something you're struggling to remember.
