Felix Felicis told Harry what to do to get what he wanted, like going down to Hagrid's and being honest with Slughorn about what he was doing outside. It was giving him directions the same as the compass, so in some ways they are similar.

It didn't tell him what he wanted, he already knew that he wanted that memory from Slughorn. It just told him how to get it.
