+231 Drop a handful of sticks on the ground, and then observe the specific layout of the pile that is formed. Now this exact pile could never be replicated if you tried to drop the same sticks a million times. That doesn't mean the first drop was impossible or even incredible. amirite?

True- but what's your point?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't know. It's an argument I heard for evolutionary creation, actually

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Explain, that sounds interesting

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, basically Christians point out that evolution isn't possible, because the odds are like 1 in a trillion. Evolutionists say that just because the odds are unlikely for a very specific situation doesn't mean that it didn't happen

This argument is quite flawed. This argument would only be valid if you dropped the sticks and they just so happened to spell out, "Joe Larson." The point isn't that something is improbable, it's that it is improbable and performs a function.

You have a point, but this function is to support life, right? And there are billions of stars and even more planets in the universe, it is almost infinite. So it doesn't seem so incredible to me that out of all those planets, one could support advanced life. How all this came together, perhaps, is a bit harder to explain.

But then you must also account for the extremely fortunate conditions of Earth, the fine-tuning of the universe, etc etc.

Although it is extremely unlikely for one person to accomplish this feat, the probability of someone, somewhere, someday accomplishing it is almost certain. This is applicable to anything.
