+182 Diamonds- Because nothing says "I love you" like a superficial and overvalued rock clawed from the guts of the Earth by slave labor, amirite?

naming your kids after minerals totally doesn't make you look greedy.

Then get a diamond that is guaranteed fair trade. And while it may seem superficial to you, there is some meaning in getting someone a beautiful stone that will last forever. It also costs a lot which means that if someone buys you a diamond, you are worth it to them =p

I lose respect for people each time they end their post/comments with smiley faces.

It won't last forever. Thousands of years from now it will turn back into solid carbon. But it will last a pretty long time.

One day people are going to realise that a diamond is just a pretty rock. I'd rather my boyfriend spend time with me, not money.

The point is that it's just a pretty rock. It's a compact, easily shown off way of showing how much your boyfriend cares about you. You can't go around telling everyone he didn't buy you a diamond so he could get you something with actual use. Also, anything to do with time has opportunity cost, unlike money, which is not a predetermined finite quantity. Say you're a gamer. He could work an extra hour a day and get you an awesome laptop which will entertain you when he's not there, or he could spend that extra hour with you, and when he has to leave, you're still bored. It's a poor analogy, but you get the point, right?

Am I the only one who finds diamonds ugly? They remind me of spit >_>

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You have sparkling, solid spit? Could you spit in a jar for me then? Make sure it's a big wad.

They remind me of spit because they're clear looking. Just my opinion. I find them ugly and a waste of money. It's nothing but a rock.

Jon Stewart's Earth book has a page about this! Actually they have a page about everything. But anyway: http://ctrlv.in/104891

It isn't just a superficial thing though. Diamonds are beautiful, strong, and durable, much like the tradition of a lasting marriage, which is why symbolically, they are usually the stone of choice.
