Raping, assaulting, or killing an adult isn't less terrible than doing so to a child.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Murder may be equally bad, but since children are super impressionable, raping and abusing them would cause more psychological damage than it would to an adult.

I don't know. I mean, I see where you're coming from, but I just feel like if the punishment for doing one of those to a child was greater, it would make doing it to an adult seem less severe.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, it does seem that way, but an adult is not as defenseless as a child is. An adult probably had more ability to protect themselves. It sounds bad, but I feel like they're lesser victims because of that.

I kinda agree with Bailey here - like, I dunno what to vote, because while I do get that a child is more defenseless than an adult, and they have a longer future that will be impacted on ...I dunno. Like, my first instinct was "Yes, that is worse" but then I kinda thought, but what about situations when an adult is just as defenceless.

I know in prison, there are hieachys (spelling?) about this - like, a rapist is pretty low, but paedophiles are pretty much the bottom of the heap and considered absolute scum. And, like, killing another guy in a fair fight isn't considered that bad to the prison population, but killing a child or a woman who couldn't defend herself put you pretty down the line.

Hierarchy?

Yeah, I mean adults can be just as defenseless as children. Killing anyone is terrible. But is the hypothetical child under 18, or is it a toddler, or what? Because if you killed a 17 year old, it's still horrible and absolutely disgusting (unless it was in self defense, and only if he or she was threatening to kill you or someone else), but it's not the same as killing a 6 month old. I guess I'm kind of arguing against myself, but I don't think that either of them is any less bad than the other.

Yeah, and even though obviously all rape is horrible, the thought of a child under 8 being raped turns my stomach a bit more than an adult, but, like, that reaction isn't enough to determine moral judgement, or an argument that their age makes it worse than it already is.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I guess it's all how you think about it. Because when I think about it like, "doing ____ to a child is worse," I'm like hell yeah it is, but when it is said like, "doing ____ to an adult is less bad," I disagree. I know this probably wouldn't happen, but if the punishment for doing ____ to a child was worse, the ____er could just wait until the person being ____ed was 18. I just think that killing, raping, or abusing/assaulting anyone is low.

inb4 someone brings up Casey Anthony

Why?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in some states isn't raping a child the only crime other then murder that can receive the death penalty?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yep. In the south. I think Alabama, New Orleans, etc.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(mchristie):I don't believe New Orleans is a state. That would be Louisiana

I thought if you did one of these things to a child it bumped it to the next class of felony than it would be for the adult. I'm pretty sure that kidnapping, for example, automatically becomes aggravated kidnapping if the child is under 6, which has a harsher punishment. I may be mistaken though, this is out of memory from a couple years ago.
