+311 A lot of people don't know what being politically "liberal" or "conservative" actually means, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Mostly Americans (Americans being ignorant as usual).

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you're so confident that you aren't ignorant, why don't you show us who you really are? I don't know what they mean, but honestly that's because I couldn't care less about politics.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Exactly, great typical American ignorant attitude — thanks for being honest. Why am I anonymous? Because we are anonymous and anonymous is legion.

You must be new here.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I've been here for 14 more months than you.

Typical American ignorant attitude? I'm 15. Why should I care about politics? As Americans, we have the right to not have to vote. I'll save the voting for those who are informed enough to make a decision. May I ask what country you're from that you're stereotyping us all? After all, the ones who buy into stereotypes are usually the ignorant ones.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"Why should I care about politics?" Enough said. I may sound like a hipster here, but you've probably never heard of the country I am from.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wanna bet? hello

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't really plan on living in America when I get older anyway so I don't see a reason to spend time focusing on politics when it won't be of any use to me. @1352727 (Anonymous): Why don't you go ahead and try me. No harm in saying. I promise I won't stereotype you as you have Americans.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Go learn about politics and vote so you don't become another ignorant American stereotype because right now you are (in your favor, you're only 15, but still). And I'm from the US

by Anonymous 12 years ago

foreigners blabbing about the American stereotype. as usual.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

would you mind defining what being politically liberal or conservative is, then? :]

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Liberal is in general accepting change and adapting to change. In other words, the intelligent people. Here are grouped the non-racists, the people who accept gays, etc. Being conservative is not changing your ideas ever and hating gays, blacks, etc. All the farmers, idiots and some rich people are grouped here. Basically, the Republican Party is conservative and the Democratic Party is liberal.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So Anon is an idiot. Liberals tend to be socially progressive, in that they accept new ideas or morals, whereas conservatives tend to be more traditional. Economically, conservatives support smaller government, whereas liberals are more socialistic. Libertarians, on the other hand, are basically socially liberal and economically conservative.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

you are both incorrect. at their most basic form, this is the difference: liberal: there should be a "liberal" use of government (big government). social programs, govt health care, laws regulating the everyday lives of people, etc. positive use of government to improve the lives of people. conservative: there should be a "conservative" use of government (small government). low taxes, government stays out of business & the lives of its people. more freedom & liberty. which is why i made this post. a lot of people who say they're liberal are actually fiscal liberals, but social conservatives (government should stay out of people's personal lives). a lot of people who say they're conservative are fiscal conservatives, but social liberals (trying to regulate morality; controls on drugs, gay marriage, etc.) basically, extreme liberalism is communism. extreme conservatism is libertarianism.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I was taught that extreme conservatism (being totally right-wing) was facism, although it seems strange given that it's still totalitarianism. People seem to think that certain members of the Republican and Democratic parties have exactly the same beliefs and goals as every single conservative/liberal. It always seemed ironic to me that vocal "conservatives" were the ones who preached against abortion, legalizing drugs, and gay marriage. They seem to say both that the government should stop interfering with their lives (taxing) and that they should be able to dictate who can marry or not.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's not true. I could see if you disagreed with me because you were using the more traditional senses of the word, but the classical meaning of "liberal" is essentially small government in all senses.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

you are referring to classical liberalism, which is a different school of thought that came after straight-up liberalism.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, but to say that liberalism=bigger government and conservatism=smaller government is over-simplifying the matter, and inaccurately portrays the two schools of thought.

Wow... that troll is well fed.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

hahaha troll isn't even involved anymore. we've moved on without them :]

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The other guy has a point. Conservatives are indeed more traditional, which is why they're against gay marriage. Liberals are progressive and have social views that are less strict. Liberals want a liberal use of the economic section of the government, but don't want social issues regulated. Conservatives want less government control economically, but more socially, since it coincides with their traditional beliefs.
