It's weird that a stylus won't work on a iPhone, iPad, etc., amirite?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Not if you understand how the touch screen works.
by Anonymous12 years ago
That didn't make sense

What didn't make sense about it?

I just don't see why a stylus won't work on touch screen. It should work because you're touching it.

It works if you use a sausage as a stylus.

I actually can't believe you didn't Google this yet. Oh well, I'll just make a nerd of myself and say it.
iPods Pads and Phones use capacitive touch screens. The screens themselves can't actually sense being touched. Touch screens use some sort of sensor or something else below the screen depending on the type of touch screen.
Resistive touch screens, which old phones and the Nintendo DS use, uses a plastic screen so that it is flexible, and a plate underneath. I can't remember entirely what kind of plate it is, but when you push down the screen with your finger or whatever, it conducts with the plate and it uses that to see where you're touching on the screen. That's why you can use anything on them. They only require pressure.
Capacitive screens react with electricity in your body through your skin and the sensors below the screen detect where this is happening to figure out where you touched the screen. This makes the touch screen a lot more sensitive and easier to use since you don't have to put a ton of pressure on it.
So now that you know how those work, does it make sense why a plastic stick wouldn't work?

Thy actually do make styluses for iPads. Not sure if they work, but they make them.
by Anonymous12 years ago
They do. My dad has one and it's pretty cool.
by Anonymous12 years ago
They make styluses for iPod touches, I know. I'm not sure about other Apple products.
by Anonymous12 years ago
If it works on an iPod Touch it works on all of them...
by Anonymous12 years ago
The stylus I have works, but it doesn't "slide" well on the screen and requires more pressure.
by Anonymous12 years ago
The stylus is probably meant to conduct with the screen the same way your finger does. The materials they need to use to make it probably creates a lot of friction. I actually tried a hot dog on my screen before and it surprisingly worked pretty well. Although I wouldn't really reccomend trying that.
