+281 It would be really weird to think about things in your head if there was no human language, because a lot of your thoughts are you talking in your mind, amirite?

That's why I wonder what babies think in. Sounds? Colors? Maybe thats why we can't remember things from childhood (you know, other than not having full braib development) because we had no way go think about them in depth.

MY PHONE IS DUMB. BRAIN* TO*

Some of the words that typos create sound really cool. "Braib", for instance.

I remember my psychology professor mentioning that we can usually remember events back to the time that we started learning how to talk. That's the time when we begin to associate words with objects.

So no one is ever going to remember any of their first year?

Probably not.

This is interesting, because there was a Cracked article that demonstrated that the language that we use changes how we see things - ie, if you know the different between the colours cream, eggshell, etc., then you'll be able to easily differentiate, but if you don't know, they all just look like off-white. Also because language relies on others. I would be interested to know (even though such an experiment would be impossible because it's inhuman) if one human was kept away from all civilisation, all other humans, animals, media/literature, on an island somewhere, would that person develop a language purely for themself - would they invent a language to write in, so they could write down their thoughts to read them later, or would that never occur to them? Would they invent music to pass the time, or, since they've never learnt the concept of boredom, never be bored?

Very interesting proposition in theory, it's unfortunate it has to remain in theory. In regard to the language, i think it would be highly unlikely they would invent their own language; language is a social construct originally invented to facilitate trade and free exchange of ideas between peoples. Without others to bargain or communicate with, there would be little need for any sort of language. I would envision them preferring to "communicate" with themselves through a series of images and feelings, associating harmful things like snakes and wild animals with bad thoughts and pain. Personally I think boredom is another social construct not necessarily stemming from, but amplified by our society with instant access to information and base needs such as food and water. If you had to be self sufficient, it's unlikely you'd be bored because there would always be things to do like making a shelter, getting food, etc.

I would have to say that this has probably been done before, but it was likely long ago and, if any records were kept, they have most likely been lost by now.

That's why I always wonder how people that were born deaf think.

Hellen Keller couldn't see or hear, so she couldn't have known any of our languages before she learned to communicate through writing. It would be really interesting if she wrote about how she formed her thoughts before she learned language.
