I´d thought it meant one who sits babies, as in teaches them to sit down or something along the lines. Not sits ON babies which most people think foreigners see.

I would think it meant someone who got paid to go to all the houses that needed their baby to sit down. And they would have to be on call like doctors but got paid like someone who walks your dog. What a terrible job.
