+206 You always use the Oxford comma and get slightly angry when other people don't, even though you know it doesn't matter, amirite?

Who gives a fuck about an oxford comma?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I've seen those english dramas too

What the hell is an Oxford comma?!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

When you're listing objects, the last object in the list will be preceded by a conjunction. If one chooses to use a comma directly before this conjunction, it's called an oxford comma. ex. 'I went to the store and bought pears, apples, and cheese.'

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ohhh I see. Thank you. And cheese is good :D

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I never knew there was a name for that. Hmm. Well I do it without the Oxford comma so... NW.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Ohh. I do that.

See http://weknowawesome.com/2011/09/30/the-oxford-comma-strippers-jfk-and-stalin/. We tend to be taught not to put a comma before "and", but if you said we invited (1. the strippers, 2. JFK, and 3. Stalin) without an Oxford comma it'd say " We invited the strippers, JFK and Stalin", which implies that JFK and Stalin are the strippers.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's the way I was taught to list things in maybe first grade. I didn't know it had a name.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I always use that, though I didn't know it had a name. And yeah, it does kind of annoy me when people don't.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It annoys me when people do use it. I reckon that makes us sworn enemies.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I reckon it does. wary

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I was taught it was wrong to use punctuation before the word 'and' in my first language. It feels wrong in English, too.

I went to the store today, and John went to the Post Office. It's a conjunction and can separate two sentences after a comma?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Honestly I thought the sentence was wrong if you didn't do this. And I didn't know it had a name. Teach me your ways kind sir

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I always did it that way but my teachers told me it was wrong, so I still did it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My English teacher takes away marks when I use it in essays and it pisses me off.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why? Even though it's not necessary, it's technically still correct.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Tell her to fuck off.
