+214 Your religion is your decision: just because your family is Christian/Muslim/Jewish doesn't mean you are too, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

This is how it should be, but it's not. Almost all religious people are victims of childhood indoctrination who have never actively researched other religions to make an informed decision about their beliefs.

I reckon 'almost all' is a bit excessive... of course there are always going to be some people like that, but most of the people I know made their own religious decisions in their teenage/early adult years, whether that be realising that they don't believe the same as their parents, or in some cases, that they do. I personally was raised by atheist parents, but I myself am a Christian.

I was thinking this today. My dad sometimes says I'm Jewish because my mom is Jewish, which really pisses me off. You aren't born with a religion. As a child you tend to take on your parents' religion, but once you're older it's entirely your decision. Religion is a choice.

You fail to realize that Jewish is not just a religion, but has also become a race. Therefore if someone's parent is Jewish, that child has Jewiah blood. They just don't have to follow the Jewish faith. That's like saying "I'm not Irish just because my mom is." ......yeah you are.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It isn't a race though.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

He's referring to the race Jewish, not that you must follow Judaism. If a person's mother is Jewish, they are automatically Jewish, but can pick whichever religion they want.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's not a race. It's a religion, which is a choice, regardless of what your mother believes.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There are two meanings of Jew. One is a person who follows Judaism and the other is a race, just as much as Japanese is both a language and a race.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Japanese is a nationality; Asian is a race. My mother's religion is Jewish. Her race is white. My race is white and I don't practice any religion. I am not Jewish in any way.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That is possibly the most uneducated statement I've ever heard. Japanese and Chinese and Indian are completely separate (though Japanese and Chinese are somewhat similar) races. Asian is no more a race than European (collection of the races German, Spanish, English, Scottish, Danish, Norweigian etc etc etc.)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

-_- On any form you fill in, Indian and Asian will be under "race". People from China and Japan both fall under the Asian race.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's because there arent enough people in the US of each individual race to separate them. In any county where many people are different Asian races, they will differentiate between races instead of using the conglomerate term.

Go find someone who's Jewish by birth and they'll explain it to you. Names that end in -berg and -stein tend to be Jewish SURNAMES. Ethnicities have surnames, religions don't. Therefore Jewish people can be BORN JEWISH because of ancestry.

I hate it when people say they are "born Jewish(or any other religion ; I'm just using this as an example because I recently heard someone say this)". No, you're not. You were born a human.

Heard this conversation between two classmates the other day: one girls says that she's starting to doubt her faith, she's not sure if God exists. Other girl says "WHAT!? No, you HAVE to believe. Why don't you believe? You can't just not believe. Think of all your family and community has done for you. How can you not believe?" Few minutes later: "No, you can't question the Qu'ran. It's just the Qu'ran. I mean...I mean, you can't question it, because it's the Qu'ran." Few minutes after that: "You shouldn't become agnostic, because your community will abandon you and you'll never be able to come back, your parents will never have contact with you or your future children. To which the first girl responds, completely serious: "Don't worry, I won't. My dad told me if I dishonour the family he'll kill me and then himself." The fuck?

My friends all know my family are Muslims, but when I told them that I was agnostic atheist, they were so confused. "WHAT? THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE! YOU //HAVE// TO BE THE SAME RELIGION AS YOUR FAMILY!" Mind you, these were my not-so-close-but-we-still-talk-on-occasion friends. I think you see why I don't talk to them that much.
