-581 They shouldn't list the names of sex offenders after they are released. They have served their time, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

just because they've served their time doesnt mean they wont re-offend. people should have the right to know who their neighbors are.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They don't do it with our criminals. You never hear ''I am a registered murderer''

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I wouldn't mind them doing it for that either...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

murderers for the most part get life in prison or extremely long sentences do they not? so they're not as big of a risk to the public as sex offenders are.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

True but some murderers do end up getting out of jail just on some parol or something.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually most murderers get out after 10-20 years at most.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

& I'm guessing you're one of these sex offenders?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not in the slightest. I actually wrote this after hearing a story of a man who was classified a sex offender for peeing in public aka "public exposure", even though he was drunk at the time. I am not sure where I stand on the issue overall. The issue kind of stinks either way. Without the list, criminals are more likely to commit again and people will lose their sense of security. Nevertheless, the list basically ruins the rest of that persons life. They lose the respect of their friends, their job prospects, their privacy, and probably their chances getting/keeping a spouse. I would definitely agree if all "sex offenders" were people like Ted Bundy, but what about people who pee in public or just have nude pictures of their ex. It seems to me that we need to have some major modifications to the definition of sex offender for me to agree completely with it.

I think they need to reevaluate what they're calling a sex offender. People peeing in public should never end up on that list. I also don't believe that an 18 year old having sex with a 17 year old should end up on that list (but it happens). However, if a pedophile moves into a neighbourhood with many families and small children, I think that neighbourhood has a right to know. I mean really, why would a pedophile want to live in an area like that, if not to perve on children?

Once a sex offender, always a sex offender.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That really depends on the offense? There was a story on HLN once aboot these teenage boys who sat on some kid's face at school. They were registered as sex offenders for that reason. As far as I know, there was no sexual premise when the "offense" took place, but they are still register nonetheless.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's crazy. Just because he sat on someone's face? If it isn't a sexual act, it shouldn't be a sexual crime.

My school made us watch a video about how a guy that was over 18 had nude pictures of his girlfriend, who was 17, that she had sent to him, and when they broke up he sent them to some people. The police found out and he became a registered sex offender.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I totally agree. If those kids were just messing around, they won't do it again. But, if it were a serious person that couldn't help themselves, they would do it again unless some change occurred in their life.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You obviously don't have a kid...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

reminds me of the Graham Norton show with that one episode where the guy doesnt have a kid so he automatically loses all arguments....

by Anonymous 12 years ago

While I disagree with this pertaining to pedophiles and people who have raped others against their will, I think it's a little ridiculous that someone's life can be ruined if their crime was having sex with a 17 year old when they were 20. I don't think someone should have to register for that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

especially since that's legal here cool

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It really sucks for anyone who's falsely accused of being a pedophile. Just recently there was a man falsely accused who lost his job, respect of anyone he ever knew, and besides some jail time he received death threats. Pedophilia is something that needs to be taken very seriously and not only do we have to warn children of the dangers of pedophiles, we also need to teach them not to lie. Just throwing this out there... I'm aware that if falsely accused your name can be taken off the list.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So, if someone like that came after you, you wouldn't want to know their name for police reports or public warnings to others?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think it depends on the offense. If it's a public urination or 17 year old with naked pictures of a 16 year old thing, then no, if it's anything worse, yes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't think all offenses should be put online, Like statutory rape, or having pictures of your underage girlfriend. I really think it should only be child molesters and repeat offenders. Everyone makes mistakes. Somethings can be forgotten. But just some.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Some cases of statutory rape can go off the list. If there's a two year difference between the couple, then the older person shouldn't have to go on the list. However, if a 16 year-old was dating, say, a 45 year old, we have a problem.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, let's let Uncle Touchy and Mr. Pedo become coaches for elementry flag football. What's the worst that could happen? That would be like letting a 'reformed' Al Qadea member become a pilot.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There could be a law that you have to tell your future employers, but not your neighbors...it's not information that should be spread throughout the world.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Bullshit, let's let those same guys live next to eleven kids with a single mother who goes out working all the time, again nothing could go wrong. This would be like Mr. Al Qaeda Member living next to the U.N. building.
