It sounds like a great plan and it would be awesome for the people themselves to vote individually on laws they want in their country, but constantly setting up voting sessions would be too much trouble and pretty expensive.

How would it be good in theory? There'd be 300 million people in one place trying to figure out how to run a country.

Not necessarily in one place. Direct democracy can work in a series of mass referendums where people are participating in an unmediated and direct way which in theory is good however the practicalities and time, money etc needed for this to work are beaten by the easier, simpler way of representative democracy we have today.
