The thermostat controls the temperature. In my house, the thermostat could say 72 but my thermometer in my living room says 68. I think its a ploy concocted by my electric company to make me pay them more.

My dad built our house and put a lot of thought and consideration to where he wanted the thermostat to go. For instance, you don't want a thermostat to be near an oven or warm surface in the winter because it will think it is warm in the whole house and not turn the heat on.

Every house I've lived in, the thermostat has been in a hallway right next to a bathroom. And it seems to just make sure the bathroom/hallway is the perfect temperature while the open spaces of the house are ignored.
