+141 Affirmative action could in some cases do more harm than good. If someone is accepted to a good college because of their skin color, and they are academically less than qualified to attend, they probably won't do as well, and won't be able to keep up with the workload, amirite?

15% of white college students aren't academically qualified to attend but were accepted anyway (mainly because of their parent's wealth), a higher percentage than racial minorities. Often they came from low socio-economic area's that didn't have the same opportunities and that's why their scores were lower because of lack of funding and good teachers and getting into college can be a way for them to make a change in their life and try to break the poverty cycle.

Yes, this is also very unfair, and I oppose that even more than affirmative action.

Also there are lots of colleges that let males in with lower academic scores (around 10% lower) because there are more female applicants for college and they want to have a balance of gender. Not to mention the students who get scholarships because of their ability in sport and don't have to preform as well academically. There are more things that they take into account when admitting students and no it's not always fair, but people always seem to only focus on the racial minority's getting in without getting the same scores when there are lots of other groups of people who get the same treatment but get less hate for it.

Ah. Nothing makes me more angry than people who get full rides because of sports. COLLEGE IS NOT FOR SPORTS.

They bring the curve down, so it's cool with me.

PLEASE explain that to the South African government. To be accepted for medicine, white students have to have at least 90% average, whereas black and coloured students only need something like 65%. And sometimes even that's not enough, our deputy head girl, who won the dux and honour summa cum laude awards was rejected for medicine.

The worlds an unfair place. You don’t get to just add up the entry percentage and let that determine who deserves it or not. If your deputy head girl wanted it she should have worked harder or repeated. Thats what i had to do to get intop law. The thing is if you look at it so narrowly like you, you are going to have a distorted perspective. Minorities usually come from low decile schools and depressed socio economic backgrounds. ill tell you it was probably fuck loads harder for that person to get that 65%. Benefits: 1) larger representation in professional class. 2) Decrease in inequities and all indirect benefits that come of from that. Basically the idea is that if you can get a black person (or Maori or aboriginal, doesn’t matter) through then you have set their families future in place, as well as provide good role models for others in their communities. 3) Usually black minorities (again generalizing) make up a huge proportion of those incarcerated= less of your tax money spent and safer communities.

As for your South African goverment, id tell them good on you for finally getting yo ass into gear.

I'm google'd out for today, didn't this get removed? I thought someone was rejected from college due to this even though they were more qualified than the person who was given the spot so it turned into a thing and ended.

Affirmative action does much more harm than good.

I think it's hard to say a blanket statement about something like affirmative action. There are plenty of cases where it does help, and also cases where it is used incorrectly and does more harm.

Affirmative action is always bad, any self respecting person would feel quite insulted knowing that they were only accepted because of affirmative action.
