+271 The ultimate irony; Best Buy not allowing a 17 year old US Armed Forces serviceman to buy an Mature rated game because he is under 18, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not really, because it's still illegal for them to do so, doesn't matter what your job is.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's not illegal, they're guidelines, and it's kind of an insult to say "well I don't think you can handle this game even though you have had intense combat training and possibly have been deployed and seen some action" Also 17 year olds can buy M rated games. Some stores don't know that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh it is where I live, but yeah laws do vary. I dunno, if it's against their store policy then that's their prerogative to sell it or not, I don't see why it should be seen as an insult to be treated the same as everyone else. And the U.S army can't deploy someone under 18, their policy is “Not assign or deploy soldiers, less than 18 years of age, outside the continental US, Puerto Rico or territories or possessions of the United States”. I don't know if you had military I.D on you or not, but they wouldn't have known what your training was, or even if you had started. I guess it could be situational irony, but it's a bit of a stretch.

How is it ironic?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because he's in the Armed Forces. He has fired a firearm and gone through combat training. He may be sent to fight, yet can't buy Battlefield 3.

It's also quite ironic how some American soldiers cam risk their lives for our country and go through all sorts of horrors overseas but can't relax with a beer when they get home...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No it's not.

Verbal irony (also called sarcasm) -- a writer makes a statement in which the actual meaning differs from the meaning that the words appear to express. Situational irony -- accidental events occur that seem oddly appropriate, such as the poetic justice of a TV weather presenter getting caught in a surprise rainstorm. Dramatic irony -- a narrative in which the reader knows something about present or future circumstances that a character in the story does not know.

Buying an M rated game: 17 years old Entering military: 18 years old

by Anonymous 12 years ago

^ this, I just turned 17 and I can get all the R movies and M games I want.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wrong. I'm in the military's Delayed Entry Program, and I'm 17. 17 year old servicemen can't deploy outside of the US, but National Guard troopers can see action after AIT. National Guard/Army Reserves let high school juniors attend Basic Combat Training in the summer. All other branches let 17 year old high school graduates finish BCT and AIT. Please do get your facts straight.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Either way, a 17 year old can buy an M rated game. So my point still stands.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Nope. Best Buy/Gamestop doesn't allow it.

^exactly

by Anonymous 12 years ago
