+369 There's a difference between lying and not telling full truths, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

A lie of omission is still a lie. You are purposefully withholding information, you know you're not telling the truth, you're lying.

So if I said "I went to the movies yesterday" instead of "I went to the movies with Katie and Laura yesterday at 8pm" I'm lying? I still went to the movies, I just omitted some details. Now, if I said "I went to the movies with Katie and Laura yesterday" instead of "I went to the movies with this guy I'm cheating on you with," then I'm lying, because I purposely changed the name of the people I was with. *All previous statements about me going out last night are completely and 100% false. I have no life.

My two bests friends are named Katie and Laura!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Haha, same! That's why I used them.

That's example does not put me in the best light, but there is a reason it is called a lie of omission. I should have added "when you're purpose is to deceive". Lying by omission includes failures to correct pre-existing misconceptions. An example is when the seller of a car declares it has been serviced regularly but does not tell that a fault was reported at the last service. So no, your example is not a lie, but no one would really need to know who you went with.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That is still not a lie though, because the car IS serviced regularly. If the dealer had said "...no fault has been reported at the last service" or something along those lines, it would have been a lie. Still, for my example, if I had said "I went to the movies yesterday" but I never said "...with the guy I'm cheating on you with", it's still not a lie, because I told you where I was.

Again, there is a reason it's called a //lie// of omission. You know after you tell the person the car has been serviced regularly, they will most likely assume that is a good thing and ask no more questions. You are purposefully deceiving them, you are being dishonest.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You're not //really// being dishonest: you told the person the car has been serviced regularly. Now, whether or not the car passed is another issue. If the client asks "is the car serviced regularly?" a simple "yes" will do, because the car //is// serviced regularly. If the client asked "has the car passed every inspection?" and you answered "yes" you would be lying.

There's a report button...This comment is unnecessary.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Agreed. I'd rather you report my post than make yourself seem like an ass.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I appreciate your concern.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Then by all means, report the post.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not the one who bothered to search for repeats and gather them up.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And the mods won't be bothered to delete this post, since it's already on the homepage.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So what were you hoping to achieve when you pasted 5 links to (semi)similar posts?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I wanted to point out to people that this is a repost. Hopefully people will go to the links and vote on some of the posts that are getting gypped because the mods failed to do their job. What did you hope to achieve by replying to me? And by the way, a couple of those posts are essentially identical to this one, and all of them are similar. Your qualifier "(semi)" is pretty wish-washy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If it's a repost, report it then. Again, you're making yourself seem bad. And what makes it worse is that you're obviously not an anon, but someone who knows their way around the site.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Interesting. Well anyway, like I said, I hope people vote on some of the posts I linked. Have a nice day.
