+408 Book characters shouldn't have overly complicated names. No one wants to read names like 'Ashaleigh' or 'Schuyler' over and over again, Amirite?

I usually change them to whatever I think is more fitting.

I read a book about a guy named John Tyler, I always thought of him as the president, insetad of the character.

When I was smaller, i would just look at a few letters and make up a random name with them. It was really awkward when I was in book club/talkin to the teacher and I used this made-up name lol.

Me too! I'd look at the first three or four letters and if i can make some sort of nickname with it i just make up a name. "Skyleigh" would end up as "Sky" in my head.

Authors should have the liberty to do what they want with their creations. When I was younger I always gave the main character whatever name I was obsessing over at the time.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They do. Its just that people won't read your book if the characters have unpleasant-to-read names

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I suppose.

Sometimes it's the whole point. I read a lot from the sci-fi and fantasy genre and there are times where a character can't be called a name based upon simplified English

I get the first example, but what's wrong with Schuyler? It's an ordinary enough name, and not hard at all to pronounce.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I keep pronouncing it differently in my head every time I read it. Its not that its a bad name or anything though.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ah, I see. Well, for future reference, it's pronounced 'Skyler'. : )

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I was way off lol. Thanks. :)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I pronounced it as "shh-ek-ooh-ler" in my head ehen I first read it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I got "Shoe-y-lier". lol

THere was a guy named Schuyler in my class last year. He ahd many nicknames which changed every couple of weeks, to come to rest on the last one. Skyler, skooler, shuailer, shuiller, squealer(although he never squealed on anyone), shweeler, and finally, squirrel.

Harry Potter: Harry, Ron, Fred, George, Snape..... Hermione?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Before my bi=ritish friend could teach me how to pronounce it, i though it was "Herm-ee-one-ee"

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Skyler and Ashley? Lol what was the hard part?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

schulyr is skylar

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It must suck for the author to have to type something like "Algaesia" over and over and over and over again...
