Don't know about in the U.S. but in Britain the cashier monitoring the self checkout has to approve the sale of condoms anyway.

I think it just depends what store you're going to. The Wal-Mart I live by doesn't card but at Hy-Vee they sell condoms like they do cigarettes and you have to ask for them.

They have them on the shelves here, but they are age restricted like knives and alcohol, so the cashier needs to over-ride the machine to allow it. I dont really see the point of buying them here though as family planning clinics dish them out for free.
