+321 In English speaking countries, we say that people are dumb if they don't know where apostrophes go. You wonder if, in countries that speak other languages, they say people are dumb if they don't know where accent marks go in words, amirite?

im pretty fluent in french but i always mess up accents in french class.

Nope, because they're mainly needed to learn pronunciation of a new word, or to differentiate it when it's by itself, but people still understand if there's context and online they even skip accents sometimes because they're lazy.

I take spanish. Alot of the words mean something different if the accent mark is added or forgotten.

They actually do. My pen pal in Romania says they often correct accent mark mistakes on Facebook, much like what we do with apostrophes.
