+110 Michael Gambon is a good actor, but he wasn't the right actor for Dumbledore, amirite?

Richard Harris forever. <3

In the books, as the series progressed and the plot got darker, Dumbledore evolved from a gentle, endlessly kind grandfather figure to a fragile, purposefully distant war leader. Richard Harris played the former role well and Gambon played the latter role well. I think Gambon could have bridged the character evolution better, but I think he did a nice job overall.

I think Dumbledore was probably the most poorly-directed and poorly-written character in the movie series. I think only Alfonso Cuaron got him right in the third movie. In the fourth movie, Dumbledore was just violent and angry, the complete opposite of the Dumbledore in the book. In the fifth movie, Dumbledore got most of his interesting scenes taken away. I guess his portryal in the sixth movie was all right, but in the 7th/8th movies, most of the material about Dumbledore's backstory was removed, and in his final scene, the character got no redemption whatsoever. I think Michael Gambon plays Dumbledore fine, the problems with the character in the movies just had to do with the writers/directors not understanding Dumbledore/not placing any importance on his story.

I agree. He was supposed to get a bit darker, but they basically took away hid Dumbledore- y air. The third one was the best. I think his whole thing was supposed to be that he still had that light and slightly odd air through most of it, while still being a genius and understanding/winning everything(:

I think Michael Gambon is really underrated because everyone keeps comparing him to the Dumbledore Richard Harris played to his; Richard Harris was of course the best Dumbledore which is why he was chosen at first, but Michael Gambon is an amazing Dumbledore too. It's not his fault anyways, I blame the director of the 4th 5th 6th and 7th movies; Don't forget that the director of the first two movies is different than the one who directed the 4th and the rest of the other movies. Michael Gambon could have portrayed Dumbledore perfectly, except maybe for the voice where I've always imagined Dumbledore's voice to be close to Richard Harris', but besides that it could have been perfect, it's just that the director chose to portray him that way. He was directed to be that way; If the director hated the way Gambon portrayed Dumbledore in the 4th movie , he could've told him to stop being so fucking aggressive. Besides, Harris only acted in the first 2 films, which were probably the least ones to portray anything important about Dumbledore. I can't imagine Harris playing the fire scene in the 6th movie, or the fighting scene in the 5th one since he was way too weak.
