+385 You're truly fluent in a language when you stop mentally translating what is said back into your native language, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I can do that with Spanish but I can't speak it for shit. Can I still be fluent please?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Haha, well, I meant as in when you're having a conversation with a native speaker :P

I know a guy that speaks I think 26 languages fluently, and he said that he thinks in the language that he's speaking. I always thought that was really cool.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Can you name these 26 languages?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Nope. I'd ask him but I'm not acquainted with him anymore. He was my sister's ex-husband's brother. So yeah...I don't know.

This includes music

Like, translating treble to bass, or?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think sugarbaby means listening to music in the other language and understanding it in that language, rather than translating the lyrics into your native language.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh, I see.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Lol that's not what I meant. I mean, looking at a note on a staff and not thinking "hmm. Okay this is an F. That mean two fingers on the D string!" but just knowing it and doing it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

O.o There are so many ways this can be taken. I think it could also be meant for translating treble to bass or vise verse, though. If you're switching some instruments, or learning piano, you have to do that.
