Eyelashes shade your eyes from the sun and catch dirt. Perhaps there's an evolutionary reason why longer is prettier - the longer the eyelashes, the more protected the eyes.

This is also probably why men, on average, have thicker and longer eyelashes than women. Since they would go out and hunt way back in the day, they would need more protection for their eyes.
