It's strange. Being active in the LGBT community, it's like entering some alternate universe when you come to sites like this and are like "Wha...? Oh yeah, I forgot there are straight people who still find this stuff abnormal. I'll never understand them!"

It's only weird if they aren't in a romantic relationship, simply because that's what the terms are commonly used for. And yes, some people do call their friends that.
