+240 An "unpopular" person stereotyping all "populars" as bitchy is just as bad as a popular person stereotyping all uncool people, amirite?

For me, (i know this is terrible, and i am trying to stop) the popular kids are bitchy until proven nice.

Is this an American thing, or just me? We didn't really have "populars" or "unpopulars" at my school... sure, there were some kids that had more friends than others, and there were quiet kids that just kept their noses down and studied (me!)... but there were no kids that EVERYONE knew, that were lorded upon by everyone else. It might just be a movie exaggeration, but every "high school" movie I've seen has cheerleaders or football players portrayed as super popular... I couldn't name even one person on the sports team at my school! EDIT: Sounds misleading. I mean, we did judge each other (ofc), and there were obviously those who were slightly more popular... it just wasn't really a huge divide. Some people had more friends, yeah, but OUTSIDE that friendship group, people were still kinda unlikely to know who they were.

I don't live in America but I've visited several times and my stepmum's American. Obviously TV exaggerates it but I think there is some truth to it, mostly because in America your social life revolves a lot more around your school than it does in most other countries, so it's easier to keep tabs on everyone.
