I am, but sometimes I don't know why

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm very, very happy to live in this country. But I am not proud. It would be arrogant to be proud of accomplishments that other people made. I didn't do anything to deserve citizenship here.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This doesn't make sense. Of course you can be proud of other people's accomplishments. If your friend gets a dream job for example, wouldn't you be proud of him/her?

Why should I be proud of something that is not at all up to me and completely random? That's like being proud of eye color. Also, countries are completely imaginary. The whole division of land into separate, distinct territories is all in humanity's head. So I don't think there's really anything to be proud of. Sure, I am sometimes thankful that I live in such a prosperous country, but I'm not proud of that fact.

This whole "countries are imaginary and I did not choose where I live" thing is not a very valid point. This is like saying I shouldn't be proud that I am a good soccer player because soccer is just another made up game and if we were playing by different rules, using our hands say, I would suck. Also, the division of countries is only in our heads as far as simple boundaries go, even if such boundaries didn't exist and had no names the cultures of each "territory" would be drastically different. Perhaps the random spot on earth where you live once had people living therewho accomplished great things, making you proud to be a future inhabitant living under the law that they created. As for having no choice, you're right in that you have no choice where you are born but you do have a choice where you make your life once you grow up and choosing to continue to live inthe U.S means you must feel some sort of loyalty towards it, weather it be because it provided you with freedom or a free public education. Oh and by theway, next time you say you're proud that you can touch rim or proud that you did well on the SAT's I'll say you shouldn't be proudofyour smarts or leaping ability. /rant

A good soccer player possesses exceptional athletic ability. Someone who does well on their SATs possesses exceptional intelligence (if it's true that standardized testing is an apt measure of intelligence, that is). But what does someone who is born in the US possess that makes them talented? An exceptional chance of being born in the right place at the right time? What country you are a part of is no indication of personal skill or talent, which are things to be proud of because they are things someone works for and achieves. And before someone says that we should be proud of our country for achieving a great economy or educational system or what not, that was not the work of the people, but the work of a select few men in powerful positions. I am certainly thankful that I have freedom of speech. As for education, personally I can't thank my country for that because I've attended private school my entire life, but I digress. But I will most likely choose to live in the US because of both complacency and recognition of how good I have it here. But that knowledge is not necessarily pride. Again, it's because of how grateful I am to live here. Gratitude is not pride.

Wayyyyyyyyyy deep down.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm happy to live here, but why should i be proud? all america is, is pride. Pride is the root of all evil.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

A tiny bit of pride is okay, its kind of like self-confidence and self esteem. There's nothing wrong in it, as long as you keep it to yourself.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

pride and confidence are two different things.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Excessive pride is a problem, but pride in and of itself is not. If you worked really hard and got an A on your final exam, you have every right to be proud. It's when you start bragging about it that it becomes an issue.

"it's kind of like"

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm glad for the life I have because I know it's better than most, partly because of where I was born. That doesn't mean I should be proud to be born where I was. If you think pride is about nationality, you're wrong.

Actually, no.

The fact that I recently stopped saying the Pledge of Allegiance makes me happy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Im proud to be an American but the pledge of allegiance is a bitch.

More proud to be a Texan than I am an American.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I come from the country of Texas!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm more proud to be a Minnesotan than an American in general.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I am proud to be an American inside and out. But seriously though fuck our current government leaders.
