The plural of "status" should be "stati," amirite?

The plural of penis should be peni

If we're going to treat it like a Latin word, I'm happy to oblige. In Latin, nominative singular words that end in "-is" are third declension, and the third declension nominative plural ending is "-es". An actual Latin example of this would be civis, civis, m.
So in Latin, the plural of penis would be penes, which looks ridiculous.

The plural of virus would be viri, which is stupid. It's a very selective rule and it doesn't make sense when it's applied to all -us words

It comes from latin. Group two words are made plural by ading the i (group 2 words are masculin. Non esse stultus

In Latin, yes, second declension words end with, in the nominative singular, "-us", and in the nominative plural, "-i". So, the plural of the Latin word "status" is "stati".
However, that is an example of a Latin word we've adopted into the English language. Since it's now an English word, it should be used under the rules of English grammar. Trying to keep each foreign word's grammar true to its original grammar is unnecessary and hard to keep track of. It'd be so much simpler to apply the English grammar rules to all English words.
