+101 Religiosity is something that is ingrained into human biology. Most people, atheists included, have experienced a religious devotion to something non-religious, be it a fandom, or a band, or a role model, or even just an idea, amirite?

Devotion and religion are different things. They are not "religiously devoted" if it isn't a religion.

Let me be clear. By "religiously devoted" I mean feeling faith in a person/idea/piece of art, a will to ignore any conflicting or damning evidence about that entity, and a feeling of happiness or satisfaction that comes from enjoying that entity.

Religion: "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs." - Dictionary.com Explain to me where faith in a person or piece of art fits in there.

Faith isn't synonymous with religion either.

Yeah...I've been a fan of things and had role models...but I never worshipped them like a god...

"Worship" is a strong word with particular connotations. But "worship" just means to have a deep respect and admiration and faith in something. I think most people have felt that about about another person, band, etc.

I suppose.. But it certainly was not in a religious manner like you say

Like those guys at College Humor that watch Boy Meets World religiously?

Slightly relevant: The Supernatural fandom is amazing.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Only because the show is amazing

I think that it is ingrained into humans to be an accepted part of a community and religion/art/sports/ideas/etc helps in that regard. I don't think that it is the need to "worship", if you will, that is a fundamental part off who we are as a species
