+479 Although everyone makes fun of hipsters for saying, "I liked it before it was mainstream," you can kind of relate to it. It's irritating when you discover something that only you and a few other people seem to know about and then pop culture gets its greasy, little hands on it and takes that special feeling away, amirite?

Does anyone else feel this way about Amirite?

That's why I don't tell my friends about it.

The hunger games.. I first read it a few years ago before many people knew about it at all, and loved it. I tried to get my friends to read it but they were uninterested. Then suddenly there's a massive obsession and movie and everyone is kinda ruining it for me.

that's the same exact way i feel about it. usually this kind of thing happens whenever a movie adaptation of a book comes out. people keep asking me "oh, are you gonna go see the hunger games?" and im just like, "no", because all of the crazy rabid fans who just read the book like a week ago are gonna ruin the experience with their rowndiness in the theater (like they did for me with hp #7...)

I totally agree. I read it the year it came out in 2008 and have been excited for this movie since rumors about it started. Now a bunch of people are getting excited about it when they don't even know what its about!! GAHH pisses me off

Mainstream ruins things. It actually genuinely ruins them. Once something penetrates the mainstream market, they adapt to it to make themselves more appealing to the masses. Case in point: One of my favourite bands, once they became mainstream, actually released an album called, 'For the Masses'. It was shit.

Or when the media only focuses on their most popular work when their other stuff is better. Like when people say "Oh I HATE (book/movie/artist)" because of one song that played on the radio or is popular among most and there's better stuff by them that no one pays attention to.

Everyone thought it was weird that I liked Green Day, The Hunger Games, Glee, etc. so much. Now, it's the "hip" thing. wtf.

Case in point: video games being moved from a niche place to a larger audience, leading to mainstream gaming being where it is today, with ctrl+v brown and bloom shooters and yearly sports sequel games, not to mention the travesty that is IGN. The hipster argument is overused, but valid, because what you loved and love can and will be changed to fit the opinion of the masses once it becomes popular. I'm not saying that's always a bad thing, but with video games it's just painful to watch.
