+120 Advertisements follow what they think people of a society want, not the other way around. So it's stupid to say that modern advertising is the reason women think they have to be thin or that men think they have to be fit. If society would stop demanding it, these advertisements would stop because there would be no one to market to, amirite?

it's a chicken or egg kind of thing. you could really argue it either way.

Disagree completely. You don't seem to realize just how much influence and power the media really has. You //honestly// think women are demanding to be portrayed over and over again as nothing short of a (physically "perfect") sex object? You honestly don't think that's going to have any effect on a little girls mentality seeing that repeatedly all of her life? Or when little boys see the same thing you really don't think it reinforces those same expectations of the opposite gender? No, I actually think it's pretty sick what gets portrayed as normal/desirable in advertising. What's even more sick are the effects of it.

^ This. When it started people didn't demand it, it's what they give us and make us feel like it's the right thing.
