It's annoying when people say that rich people are rich because they worked harder. There are plenty of middle and lower class people who work just as hard, if not harder, and just aren't as fortunate, amirite?

It's not always about working harder, it's about working smarter.

@AndyBlacksmith It's not always about working harder, it's about working smarter.

Or sometimes it's about being born into wealth and not working at all.

Well yeah people born into wealth don't usually have to work to hard for it but there are those who have worked for their fortunes.

Yes, I know. Likewise, there are those who work incredibly hard and just get screwed. I just don't think people should generalize about this quite so much.

Although this post is somewhat true, it's even more irritating when people say that. The vast majority of rich people weren't just born into wealth.

Born into, married into, acquired through questionable means, had the right connections, etc... Look I never said anything about a majority of wealthy people not earning their wealth. My whole point is that people shouldn't generalize. (On this site especially) most people seem to assume the rich are all hard working, upstanding people and the poor are all worthless, lazy bastards. I think that's annoying. Also, neither of us can realistically claim how the majority of people get their wealth. Again, I just think people should stop making assumptions.

Yea like you can work really hard at a low paying job but you well never be as successful as if you had made the decisions leading to a good high paying job

My teacher once made a good comparison with this: "Chances are if your parents were chunky monkeys you'll be a chunky monkey too. But to stay a chunky monkey you have to eat quite a bit"

People are always going to have advantages that others don't. That's just the way it works. And it's no reason to look down on them.

I hate whenever somebody tries to penalize success whether it's inherited or earned

I hate whenever somebody tries to penalize a less successful individual as if it were deserved. Most 'sucessful' people have attitude that comes in the form of 'contempt' for others not on the same 'level'. What a joke.

They obviously did something different. And don't say "Yeah, they were born into a wealthy family!" There are plenty of modern rags-to-riches stories.

You can be poor and still be smart but if you don't work hard and search out opportunities in life you'll never make it to the top

Scratch your way t the top....is that all that matters? I guess when the wealthy guy is lying next to the pauper in the morgue it's pretty much the same.

I have a stupid analogy using SAT scores. I got over a 2100 on the SATs with no tutoring/classes because we don't have the money for that. My friend said the SAT was really easy and got a 2210 but her parents are college-educated, well off and she had a tutor, whereas my parents don't speak English, didn't even go to hs and don't know what the SATs are. So yeah anyone can get a high score, but there are so many circumstances that play into it, and I don't think it's fair for someone like her, or someone who is rich to say that it's easy because they did it, when they had advantages from the start.

Being wealthy isn't really about how hard you work while in your career, but instead how hard you worked when you were a kid to get a good education. That's if the rich person actually makes their fortune, anyways.

@YeahIAm Being wealthy isn't really about how hard you work while in your career, but instead how hard you worked when you...

Not necessarily. You can work really hard and get a degree in business and go off and do really well, and someone can work equally as hard and get their degree in education and get paid a teacher's salary for the rest of their life.
Wealth doesn't always have to do with education or how hard one works. Your career field has a lot to do with your salary, and in some cases (like with teachers), you don't have much control over salary because teachers only make so much.

I also hate it when people act like wealthy people should be ashamed for their wealth. For example, Bob and Jim are best friends. They both work hard in school and make straight A's and go to a good college. Bob goes to medical school and becomes a doctor, while Jim becomes a teacher. They both work hard, they both help people, but Bob gets paid more than 3 times as much as Jim. Now, would it be fair for Bob to criticize Jim and call him lazy and tell him he doesn't deserve a pay raise? Of course not. Would it be fair for Jim to tell Bob he doesn't work hard enough to deserve his salary? Of course not.

In a family line of wealthy people, at some point there was an unwealthy person who busted ass to make a fortune. That means everyone has the opportunity to become wealthy, you just have to put in the effort. Wouldn't you want your children/(great)grandchildren to be born into that kind of life?

It isn't necessarily how hard a person works. It is an idea that becomes something big, or the ability to save/invest money wisely. Everyone can do that.

My mom came to America with $100 in her pocket and married my dad who's family basically disowned him when he became a Christian. My parents worked their butts off to provide for us and eventually they began to thrive. My dad was able to put me, my brother and sister, all through Private school and now University and we live in a two story house in a pretty damn nice neighborhood.

Yeah, I didn't have to do anything. But I am sure proud as hell of my parents for working hard and making something for themselves and their children.

It's annoying how people generalize how people earn their money based on their social status. It's all a matter of circumstance. You can't really predict why the rich are rich and the poor are poor because the reasons vary for each person.

The Wealthy, enough is never enough and always looking for more. Greedy bastards.
