Holden Caulfield. Sure he's depressing and he's a hypocrite when he talks about phonies, but I think a lot of the people that hate on him are more like him than they might think. Plus with his experiences, I //almost// feel sympathy for him. I just wish my English teacher did not overanalyze that book.

Briony Tallis (Atonement), without question. Okay, so I'll admit she was kind of an annoying kid, but she did NOT commit her crime on purpose. She didn't have any malicious intent, she was just an immature girl with a false sense of heroism. And I honestly felt sorry for her as an 18-year-old; the only reason she seemed like a martyr was because she misunderstood what she needed to do to make up for it. Apologizing was the right thing to do, but her sister wasn't making it very easy for her to do so. ...Yeah, I could write twenty pages on this, but that would probably be boring for you guys to read, so I'm just gonna stop here. :P
