Being able to see the strings shouldn't ruin the idea of levitation or flight, amirite?

You mean in a movie when you can see the wires? I would agree, though I do think it can be distracting.

And when I say idea I mean IDEA not illusion. It obviously removes the illusion of flight, but the idea should stay strong in my opinion.

Is this some sort of metaphor?
