+148 Gay people shouldn't be proud to be gay, just like straight people aren't proud to be straight, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I see what you are saying, but I think they should be proud that they are courageous enough to come out in such a hateful society.

I'm glad someone said this so I didn't have to figure out how to write it. :D

The fact that gay people have to deal with discrimination and all that shit completely dismantles this logic. When black people were treated unfairly (that's not to say that they aren't today, just not nearly as prominently and whatnot) and equal rights finally did start coming about, it was good to be proud of your race. It's somewhat symbolic of rising above all the nasty shit and still loving and being proud of yourself. Being a total dick about it, on the other hand, isn't okay.

You should never be proud of something you didn't work for. Feel proud because you worked hard and got a promotion, feel proud because you got a good score on a test. Being proud of something that you have no control over is like feeling guilty because a whale died in Antarctica and you didn't save it.

We're not proud that we are gay. We are proud of who we are as people even though we are gay. Because a lot of society tells us we shouldn't be because it's wrong.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

They should be proud to an extent. Everyone should be proud of themselves. -to an extent.

I agree. This is why I don't like the Pride Parades. Yes I understand they're fighting for equal rights, but marching in little clothing with the gayest possible attitude possible isn't helping. It's enforcing stereotypes. During the Civil Rights Movement black people didn't march down the street acting like stereotypical black people, they acted like normal people who wanted equal rights.

The Pride Parade isn't a protest like how the Civil Rights Movement was. It's just something people do for fun. Gay people can be themselves and be as flamboyant as they want without being looked down upon for once.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

They're still hurting the community as a whole. It's promoting negative stereotypes that politicians use against them.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But society tells us to be ashamed of who we are. Why can't we fight back by being proud?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

By fighting back, do you mean standing up and asking for equal rights? Then yeah, go for it. I have issues with the people who put on skimpy outfits and march down the street acting like flamboyant faggots.

I think people like you are the reason why they do it. It's basically a big fuck you to all the haters when they go out and rub their gayness in everyone's faces. I think it's kinda funny.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Haters? I support the gay community, but in my opinion the Pride Parades are hurting the gay community.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Pride Parades aren't hurting anyone at all. It actually does the opposite by encouraging people to be themselves and not to give a fuck about what people like you think.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You really aren't making a good case for "I support the gay community" when you throw around derogatory terms like faggot.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm proud as fuck for having arms. It's the same thing.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah, because both are irrelevant.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

They're completely relevant.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think this could have been worded better, but i catch your drift.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

... i'm proud to be straight

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think gay people shoul have 100% equal rights as everyone else but I'm not really a fan of Pride Parades because they just reinforce stereotypes & stuff.

When marginalized groups say they're proud for being themselves, it's different than the mainstream (not the best word but whatever) group saying they're proud. For example, I'm a Latina woman. I'm proud to be Latina. Because I am a POC in a society where POC are oppressed (if you don't think so, please google white privilege), I should be proud for being myself. A white person saying they're proud for being white, like a straight person saying they're proud to be straight, isn't the same, because they're treated well in society already. They're not oppressed due to their trait, so saying they're proud to be such a trait sounds like they're upholding their superiority and privilege over other groups. And before anyone says some BS about how we live in a post-racial society, or how POC aren't discriminated, or some crap about racism against whites, educate yourself because that is NOT the case. But yeah, if we lived in a society where gay colored females held the power and used it to oppress others, then white people/straight people/males can say they're proud of their traits. Otherwise, no.

I read about white privilege on Wikipedia and while I don't necessarily disagree, I have one question: What are the advantages white people have? In reading about it, although things like "There are many specific examples" were everywhere, I didn't see any specific examples at all.

http://ted.coe.wayne.edu/ele3600/mcintosh.html If you scroll down, there's a list. The thing about privilege is that one is usually unaware of it until it's pointed out. As a straight person, I don't think I have any privilege for being straight, but I'm sure that a gay person would be able to point it out to me over things like having people of my orientation being widely represented. It's like that, a white person sees their race widely represented in media and textbooks especially, where amerindians/africans have their histories defined in relation to their contact with Europeans.

If we shouldn't be proud of things we can't control, why are so many people proud of their country and their heritage?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Gay pride, just like black pride, was invented to counter the shame and prejudice that they are subjected to. In a perfect world, you're totally right, no one should be proud of their sexual orientation, race and other things that are out of their control. They should be proud of their accomplishments instead, right? But this isn't a perfect world, and throughout history minorites have been subjected to persecution, discrimination, and shame by the majority. That is why gays and other minorities come out and say they are proud of who they are, it's basically a middle finger to everyone who has treated them like crap. That is why there is no straight or white pride (except among white supremacists), because these people don't have to put up with any crap. I'm surprised this has gotten such a positive response, but in theory you are totally right.
