+170 Arguing about which religion is right is pointless, but discussing religion and giving insight to your opinion is meaningful, amirite?

I agree 100%. That argument was unbelievably stupid and I regret even commenting in the first place.

Agreed; it's cool to learn about other religions, and to know what makes people feel the way they do about them. no one is going to change their beliefs because of a very strong opinion.

I agree that the person you're arguing with won't change their mind. But one of the readers who is on the fence might be swayed. So I still see a reason behind.

Why would you care to sway anyone, though? Surely they should be able to figure their beliefs out on their own, without an obvious bias.

That's what a discussion is for. You present your opinion for your belief and let others take from it as they will.

I think arguments, as long as they're civilised, help out because they present points that were not previously discussed. It all comes down to making sure it doesn't just become a flame war.

I also think "Debate" would be a better word than argument. Arguments are typically pointless.

I choose argument because most of the time whenever religion is brought up on the internet it turns uncivil pretty quick.

Some people may not have thought about certain points of the discussion before. Or even the issue at all. It will just open them up to it and they will get at least a slight idea of opposing sides, then they can do research for themselves. But if they base their entire opinion off of an internet argument then that kind of says something about them as a person.
