+61 It's amazingly difficult to clearly define the word "human" without excluding one or many groups of people, amirite?

My teacher who brought this up also talked about the controversy about the definition of "child." I personally found it interesting how difficult it was for my class to find a definition. We spent days and still didn't find a definition good enough. If you think you have a really good one, feel free to tell me and I might share it with my teacher.

Also, if I have any spelling/grammar errors as well as awkward phrasing in the post, please do tell me!

My teacher had a perfect comeback for that, I'll make sure to ask him tomorrow!

To your definition of child, my teacher said that we always develop and do not cease to develop until we start to die. Are you saying that a 20 year old is a child?

The reason this was brought up is because we were trying to find out the definition of child that the world could agree on. Some countries consider a person a child until they hit puberty. Others say it's until 18. You say it should be until they stop growing. We were trying to find a definition of child that everyone could agree on. We even had to ask our parents and those of us with parents that come from different parents said they were considered a child until puberty and then they were considered adults. I think I wasn't clear on why we were having troubles with defining child since defining human had some bigger troubles. By the way, this post should have said was "It's amazingly difficult to clearly define the word "human" that everyone can agree on, amirite" but I changed it because I wasn't thinking clearly.

I think what op is talking about abortion or at least partially. At what point are you "killing?"

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes, I just asked my teacher an he said that once we get into genetics, we include the time a baby is concieved. Then that would make abortions murder by your definition. I'm not giving my opinion on abortion, butthis is what my teacher said. He also mentioned this might exclude people with Downs syndrome.
