I can't speak for Japan on this, but in China all kids, boys and girls, have to have short hair at school. Girls can have slightly longer hair with a pony tail too sometimes, but it depends. Usually the boys and girls have quite similar hair-dos. When I was teaching in Dalian, my classes had up to 60 kids, and there were several occasions where i mistook girls sitting at the back for boys. Whoops!
