-66 Every genre of music can be made worse by adding the prefix "synth-", amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Genres of music don't end with synth, and even if they did ending with the prefix that means "with" doesn't make them bad.

I meant "synth" to be short for "synthesizer."

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That isn't a prefix it's an abbreiviation.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think in this sense it still works as a prefix, since it gets attached to the beginning of a word.

It's a prefix if it means "with", it being at the beggining of a word doesn't make it a prefix especially not when it's being used as short for synthesizer.

It being at the beginning isn't the only qualification to be a prefix. ex: pre means "before", it is a prefix. Irrelevant has the prefix "ir", which means "not", ir is a prefix. Synth means with, if it's being used to say with, then it's a prefix. If it's being used as short for synthesizer, it's an abbreviation. It has to change/add to the meaning of the root word to be a prefix. ex: relevant and not relevant (irrelevant)

"Synth" totally changes the meaning. "synthpop" and "pop", for example, have two //**__completely__**// different meanings.

Synthesizer pop is the same thing as pop considering pretty much all pop uses electric sounds. With pop doesn't change the definition of pop. No matter how you dice it, you're wrong.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"pretty much all pop uses electric sounds." What an incorrect statement! - First of all, electric sounds ≠ synthesizers. An electric guitar or bass also fits this category. - Second of all, not all pop uses //electronic// sounds (I'll assume that was the word you meant to use). For example, The Beatles were pop, and they had hardly any synths. - Third of all, if there was no difference between synthpop and regular pop, they wouldn't be two separate genres. But they are, so there must be a difference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthpop ) But despite all that, let's look at a different genre: Synth Folk is very clearly something different genre than Folk. Therefore, "synth" changes the meaning, and is a prefix.

... how is this negative?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Probably because more people disagree then agree with this particular post.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why do more people disagree then agree with this particular post? Would you really want to listen to Synth-Blues? Synth-Rock? Those sound way worse than blues and rock.

Synth techno

I'm pretty much judging on one band(er, duo) but I don't like pop much, nor do I like synthpop much other than Hurts. They are awesome, therefore synthpop>pop.
