Eschatologists have always used current-day sophistication to come up with doomsday arguments. They formulate predictions at precisely the time it's most applicable to the state of the world. But, on any scale an exponential curve looks the same. You always seem to be at the beginning, miniscule compared to what's to come. So, assuming the exponential curve of the human population extends into infinity, a catastrophe will always appear to be "just over the horizon", amirite?
