+122 It seems sightly dystopian and disturbing that DNA sequences are being trademarked and "people" become "brands", in essence losing their persona. Amirite?

Organisms are basically what we consider to be highly advanced robots. I personally don't find it too surprising.

I've heard of Monsanto patenting their seeds and farmers being prosecuted because some of Monsanto's seeds blew over into their farm without their knowledge. That alone is disturbing, not to mention that pretty much everything we eat contains GMOs with companies like Monsanto effectively lobbying against putting GMO labels on food.

This already happened with digital information. A combination of bits can be owned by a company and if you wish to read that combination, you must pay for it. Stories like this make me want to shoot the plaintiff and any judge who rules in favor of the plaintiff right in the shins.
