+129 No one seems to realise that, just like Americans and Britons, Australians also have different regional accents, amirite?

I didn't say NW because I don't agree there are no accents - but I disagree that "noone seems to realize" - just about EVERY country has regional accents, not just the English-speaking ones. Spend some time in China and you'll know what "regional accent" really means, haha.

I am aware that English is not the only language which varies, I just figured that most amirite users are from America/Britain, so they know about those accents more. And the point was that if someone thinks about an Australian, they immediately jump to a Paul Hogan/Steve Irwin-like stereotype, even though a pretty small proportion of Aussies speak that way. In relation to China, if you're talking about differences between Mandarin/Cantonese/Taiwanese/Shanghainese etc., they are really more akin to separate languages entirely rather than accents.

China - no i'm talking about actual regional dialect and accents. So you're saying that when Aussies think of Brits or Americans they don't immediately jump to those stereotypes of us? I don't think Australia is the only one subject to stereotyping.

I see your point, but there are heaps of British/American TV shows broadcast here, so we do see a few different accents, whereas Australians in overseas TV shows are generally blatant stereotypes.

To my knowledge, that's only true of satirical sketches, which are exaggerated anyway. And usually Australians would play australian characters in TV shows overseas. You can't take satire that seriously. The fact that it exists for most countries is all the reason you need not to think that Australia is being singled out

Canadians in shows always seem to have some Maritime-like accent (eg. about sounding like aboot) and overuse "eh?" It makes me cringe every time.

As an Aussie I must say that while we are stereotyped into one accent a fair bit, we also tend to jump straight to the stereotypes for British and American people as well. I guess it's a two way street there. I personally have a British accent due to my heritage, but I've never even been to England.

What do you mean "due to your heritage"?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Maybe I worded that badly. Both my parents are British and both Grandparents as well. They all have the accent so I do to by default.

but you grew up in australia?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yup. I spend a lot of time around my family
