+234 The more protective the parent, the more likely the child is going to want to sneak around. It's better to just be open with your kids and actually know what is going on in their lives, and help them through it, amirite?

I had a friend whose parents were so strict and protective. The rest of us turned out fine but she rebelled and ended up being the worst out of all of us.

My parents have always been really cool about giving me privacy when I'm with someone. They'd let my boyfriend stay over in my room, give us space and let us make our own decisions. They're also open and comfortable with alcohol and smoking - never strictly forbidding me from having just a sip of beer or smoking (although I would never smoke). It's made me a lot more aware and responsible than I would've been if they were overprotective.

That's the approach that my parents take with me. I'm open with them about everything I do or might do, and they don't try to punish me for it because they trust me to make my own decisions.
