But if your cover picture is of your friends, then (I think) it's weird to not be in it. Almost like saying 'I consider these people my friends, but they don't actually like me enough to put me in their picture.'

Why? What am I supposed to put then, a picture of my favorite band? no thx. A picture of something clever or creative or symbolic is cool I guess but not everyone is that creative. Anyways it's no longer a picture of me, but all of my previous cover photos besides this one were pictures of me and one was a picture of me and my friends and why am I telling you this.

Mine is usually me with a group of friends. But I think that's kind of different than just having another big picture of my face :P
