+69 It's annoying that people can argue about which smartphones are better while half the people in Africa don't even have running water. Be glad you only have first world problems, amirite?

My Nigerian friend says that everyone in Nigeria has a blackberry... but really, this is the exact same thing as telling a depressed person "stop being depressed, look at Carol over there, she lost her whole family in a terrible car crash... she should be depressed!"

It depends on where you live of course. Urban areas have higher technology and greater affluence, rural areas just the opposite. Many Africans still live in rural areas. And in the dry savannahs of southern africa, water is scarce and women walk for miles to gather water from wells. Also your analogy doesnt make much sense. It's always better for people to look down and see who is more disadvantaged than them so they can be more grateful about what they have.

Have you actually been to Africa? Also, since you didn't like my first analogy, here is a second one. Let's say that one day, you lose your house, your pets, and a lot of your possessions in a fire. Are you going to say something like "oh well! There are people in Malawi who have less than me so I should't be sad" or are you going to be angry and depressed?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That was more of a hypothetical than an analogy... -.-

What an extreme situation to make up. Of course you have the right to be sad and upset. I was saying people in privileged positions relative to the rest of the world shouldn't be complaining as much, not that they don't have a right to be sad and upset when bad things happen to them. We clearly have a misunderstanding here and I will end it at that before you start making up some more far-fetched hypothetical situations and misunderstand my point even further.

That would make for a fun game in the comments: who could come up with the most far-fetched hypothetical describing your post! I have so many involving touhou that this would be quite fun (^0^)/

I hate it when people say stuff like this. How big a problem is has a lot to do with where you live and what kind of environment you're in. For some people, losing their iPhone might be a big deal to them because it's all relative to the situation you're in, at least in my opinion. It's like if you had $100 and your friend had $1,000, it's a bigger deal for you to lose $50 than it would be for your friend because she has more in the first place. Basically, you can't chastise someone for being upset about something. Just because there are people across oceans, under completely different circumstances, who are struggling, doesn't mean that in that person's own life, said event isn't detrimental. I sincerely hope that made sense.

You said it soooo much better than I could (;__;)

It feels good to write a comment that's over 5 sentences and still have people understand it y

It's annoying when people post things like this when some people in Africa don't even have internet to agree/disagree, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I bet if those Africans were going to spend their hard-earned money on a smart phone, they would deliberate quite a bit more on what the best choice is than we would

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How can you get annoyed at people arguing about smartphones? There are people in Africa can't be annoyed, because they're dead. See how annoying this is?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah today my friend George tried telling me stuff he doesn't like about the iPhone, and I was like, how the fuck are you going to complain about issues pertaining to your life and situation, while there are people halfway across the planet without running water??? It's ridiculous, only the poor Africans should be allowed to complain.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why does everyone always say Africa? Because now, when I tell people I've been to Africa, they don't believe me because "there's too much malaria, you would be dead right now," or "where would you even stay?!"

^THIS... the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at was in Uganda.

Funnily enough, the water pipe down the road was burst yesterday and I'm still without water (in Africa). Things like this piss me off. I've said it before - if we shouldn't be upset or angry because some people have it worse, then we should never be happy because someone else will always have it better.
