I've done it on many occasions, not as hard as you would think - the same word and/or concept exists in many languages - after having a stab at a verbal explanation, reinforce it with simple examples.

Explaining "the" to the chinese - now THAT is a pain in the arse. And when one should use it and when not --- it's wrist-slashingly frustrating.

So has various meanings and the ways to correctly use it are often confusing and inconsistent. That's why it's hard.
