+53 When people make a serious point about something and add "I read that somewhere" - they're probably talkin about Wikipedia, but don't want to say in case they get torn into for relying too much on Wiki as the source of all their information, amirite?

or they were probably just told that, and they want to make it seem more reliable

It's more likely that they read it on a random website and assumed it true because there are bits of science on the site. Wikipedia is one of the most reliable sources on the Internet.

Reliable or not - having a SOLE source of information, especially one with the reputation Wiki has is something people don't want to broadcast. And it's bad to have only one source, no matter how good you think it is.

Saying "I read it on Wikipedia" doesn't mean that you only use one source of information any more than "I read it somewhere" does.

Try reading the post more carefully - it's about a fear of a perception. Stop twisting my words.

I'm sorry, I'm not attacking your point of view, I was just saying that when I hear someone say "I read it somewhere" I never assume they read it on wikipedia and usually assume they read it somewhere like "LOLFacts" or some stupid website like that.
